9 Questions with DeAndre Jordan, NBA All-Star

By WHOOP

Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan answers 9 questions about his performance lifestyle as an elite athlete.

Taken 35th overall by the Clippers in the 2008 NBA draft, DeAndre Jordan has far exceeded the expectations that come with being a second-round pick. Over the past four seasons, Jordan has averaged 11.8 points, 14.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game, while twice leading the league in rebounding. He’s also led the NBA in field-goal percentage in each of the last five years. A model of durability, Jordan never missed a game from 2011-2015 and has played in 470 of Los Angeles’ last 476 regular-season contests. Last week, he was named to an All-NBA Team for the third consecutive year.

WHOOP recently spoke with the All-Star big man (DJ has been on the system since January) about our three Pillars of Performance: Strain, Sleep and Recovery.

1. Describe your workout regimen on high-Strain days.

DJ: Eat. 8am – Weight lifting. 11am – Practice, cardio. Eat. And always staying hydrated. I’m assuming game days are higher Strain, but as of now we aren’t allowed to wear our WHOOP!

2. What training tip do you give most often to amateurs?

DJ: Embrace the hard work, and become comfortable with being uncomfortable.

3. Who in your profession would you most like to compete against, all time?

DJ: Bill Russell.

4. How often do you nap?

DJ: 5-7 times a week. Always on game days.

5. What’s your bedtime routine?

DJ: Change my clothes, brush my teeth, wash my face, plug in my WHOOP, go through social media, plug in my phone, sleep.

6. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

DJ: Check my phone.

7. How do you handle jet lag?

DJ: It doesn’t really affect me that much, but I’ll usually just nap/rest/relax.

8. When did you have your worst WHOOP Recovery?

DJ: Coming home late after a road game.

9. Finish this sentence: WHOOP has made me realize…

DJ: …how hard and how much I train as an athlete, and that I need more sleep!
